Employment Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When does the recruitment process begin for AAS?

We are continually recruiting outstanding staff to join our team. With respect to international recruitment, we post confirmed and anticipated openings in mid-November. The school looks to attend recruitment fairs in January and/or February. We do a significant amount of recruiting via Skype and other similar modalities.

When does on-site new teacher orientation start?

New teachers are required to arrive in Sofia mid-way through the second week of August. The specific window of days changes depending of the first day of school for students. Of note, the first day of school for students is the last week of August. To help with planning we post school calendars three years in advance. The first day for incumbent teaching staff is four school days before the first day of school for students.

Does AAS recruit families, couples, and singles? In the case of couples do both people need to have positions at AAS?

Our practice and policy is to hire the best match for our school and community. On staff, we have single teachers, teaching couples and families with up to three children.

Are there employment opportunities in Sofia for non-teaching partners?

Employment opportunities for non-teaching spouses will depend on the career of the spouse. Some partners of our internationally recruited staff are self-employed in fields of design, fitness, finance and education.

What questions does the school ask in relation to a potential vacancy?

Before recruitment begins, the following questions are addressed:

  • Is it necessary to fill the vacancy / role?
  • Does the role require changes in job description, duties and responsibilities
  • Could the work be accomplished (to a high degree) in other ways?
  • Does the role's remuneration need to be reconsidered? Is the current remuneration in line with other roles at AAS and with like roles in other schools?

How many applications does AAS receive in a typical school year?

For posted teaching positions we receive an average of about 120 applications per opening. For non-teaching posting we receive between 20 and 150 applications per posting.

What steps does AAS take to ensure the best staff are hired?

AAS uses a variety of reputable and well-established recruitment agencies to advertise openings and assist with candidate screening if needed. After initial screening we conduct multiple interviews with finalist candidates. We also conduct confidential reference checks - following a protocol that looks at fit for overall community, high competence in professional area and child safety. To ensure safety and security we have a Child Protection Plan and we require police checks.
