Supporting Every Learner

At AAS, we believe that every child deserves to feel included, challenged, and supported as they learn and grow. One of the ways we bring this belief to life is through our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)—a proactive, research-based approach that helps us make sure each student receives exactly what they need to succeed.

MTSS provides three levels of support:

Tier 1: High-quality core instruction for all students.
Tier 2: Targeted, small-group support for students who need a bit more practice or reinforcement.
Tier 3: Intensive, individualized support for students who benefit from more specialized instruction.

The goal of MTSS is simple: notice student needs early and respond quickly, so challenges never become barriers to learning.

How MTSS Works at AAS
At AAS, Tier 1 support begins with our Student Support Team, which meets weekly to partner with classroom teachers in discussing individual students or small groups. This team includes administrators, learning support teachers, EAL teachers, and school counsellors. Teachers bring forward academic, social-emotional, or behavioral concerns, and together we brainstorm strategies and next steps. When helpful, our math and literacy coaches join the conversation to offer additional insight.

These weekly meetings create space for thoughtful discussion, shared problem-solving, and coordinated planning. They also allow us to make timely referrals to school-wide or external services when needed—ensuring that students receive support as soon as it’s helpful.

Across all tiers, our student support team works closely with homeroom and subject teachers to strengthen, extend, and personalize learning. Students might take part in small, flexible groups led by classroom or learning support teachers. These groups shift and change as students grow, master new skills, or need different kinds of support. This flexible approach ensures that every child gets what they need—whether that’s extra practice, specific accommodations, or opportunities for challenge.

At AAS, we are committed to keeping MTSS a dynamic, responsive, and student-centered process—one that helps every learner feel capable, confident, and supported every step of the way.
