Message From the AAS School Board of Directors

Dear AAS Community Members,

The AAS Board of Directors needs your help to identify the perfect person to serve on the Board next year as our community representative.  After years of dedicated service, our wonderful current representative, Pamela Della Toffola, will be stepping down from her position (thank you Pamela!) and we need to find the right person to fill this important role.

What does the position entail?  As one of nine volunteer members of the AAS Board of Directors, the community representative will attend Board meetings approximately once per month, as well as regular committee meetings (e.g., related to finance or governance issues).  Along with the other Board members, the person will provide strategic direction for AAS through Director Tim Fries and the administrative team.  Community members of any nationality are eligible and the position does not require previous experience in the education field.  The main requirements are a demonstrated commitment to the school, dedication to upholding the school’s values, and a willingness to fully commit time and energy to participation on the Board.  The community member will serve a two-year term.

A few important clarifications to note:  first, this position is different from serving on the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Board, which is a distinct and equally important job focused on facilitating community engagement at AAS (there will be a separate notice from the school detailing that opportunity).  Second, the Board of Governors is focused on long-term, strategic planning for the school; day-to-day operations are managed by Director Fries, the AAS Principals, and other administrators.

If you are interested in serving as the community representative on the Board, or know someone in the community that would excel in this position, we would love to hear from you.  Please email nominations for yourself or other community members, including a brief explanation of interest and qualifications, to Ms. Zhulieta Nikolova, the Director's Executive Administrator (znikolova@aas-sofia.org) by 17:00 on Thursday, April 30, 2026.  Current Board members will review expressions of interest and select the representative from qualified candidates.

You can learn more about the AAS Board of Directors at the Parent Coffee on Friday, April 3 (08:30-09:30), when Dr. Fries and Board members will share information about the 2026-27 school year and answer any questions.

Many thanks for your help on this important issue.

Evan Fox
Chairman, AAS Board of Directors
