Tutoring English to Ukrainian Refugees

One of my CAS experiences I enjoyed most was tutoring English as a foreign language once a week at the Ukrainian Education HUB in Sofia, a school for Ukrainian refugees. This experience gave me the opportunity to learn how to lead a speaking group for a group of students of different ages, but to also tutor someone one on one. I planned many different activities; from choosing exercises from workbooks for grammar and vocabulary, to having discussions in English with the students and playing board games.

I was able to work with both elementary school students and high school students over the year that I volunteered at the HUB. Although at times it was difficult to fulfill the needs of each student as they were all on different levels, I think it was still beneficial to everyone. The differing needs of students allowed me to learn how to plan multiple different activities for the same tutoring session and try to come up with something that both beginner and more advanced levels of English can benefit from. I learned about different methods of teaching a language and was able to meet many different people through this service experience.
