Helping Peers Develop Life Skills

Starting my Life Skills Friday Feature was a bit of an experiment–I noticed that a lot of high school students didn’t know basic things like how to sew a button, budget their money, or write a professional email, so I decided to do something about it. I had never taught a class before, but I figured things out as I went, learning how to organize lessons, keep people engaged, and adjust based on feedback. Leading it for almost two years helped me become more confident speaking in front of groups and better at managing time and responsibilities. It also made me realize how much I enjoy helping others feel more prepared for the real world. Most of all, I learned that I don’t need to be an expert to make a difference, just willing to take the first step.
