Grade 7 students recreate famous artists in origami

The theme of Library visits and initiatives this year is paper folding and the use of paper in illustration.

To support the theme and introduce students to the world of paper art, the AAS Library invited Polina and Borislava Hristova, owners of the only origami atelier in Bulgaria, to work with 7th grade students. Each class, 7A, 7B, and 7C, worked alongside Polina and Borislava for 3 class periods. The classes were supervised by Owen Davis, the MS/HS Art teacher.

What were the students working on? Three famous artists were selected - Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, and Salvador Dali. In the weeks before the origami project Mr. Davis taught 7th grade students who these individuals were and what they contributed to the art world. Polina and Borislava arrived after these art discussions to lead the origami project. Each class worked on a separate art figure, folding paper into intricate squares and figuring out where to place certain colors to create a caricature image of the famous artist.
