Our History

Today we are an open admissions, international school with almost 600 students from around 50 countries and over 150 local and international staff committed to engaging and supporting our students and community at large.

After 50 years of providing international education to the international community of Sofia, we are proud of our humble beginnings - but even prouder of the large, successful and vibrant community we have become!

The AAS Timeline...

1967

  • AAS was established for the children from the embassies of the United States and the United Kingdom. At that time, we welcomed fewer than 15 students who studied in a small building in downtown Sofia.

  • With almost 30 students, AAS had outgrown its original building and moved to the neighbourhood of Knyazhevo. Gradually the school enrolled students from foreign businesses and other embassies, in addition to the US and UK diplomatic missions.

  • As more students joined AAS, the campus was split with Elementary students staying in Knyazhevo and students in grades six to eight (Middle School) moving to a floor in the US Marine House near Studentski Grad. It was around this time is that Bulgarian students were permitted by the authorities to attend AAS.

1998

  • 1998 - AAS rented space at the American College of Sofia.
  •

2006

  • 2006 - AAS moved to our current, purpose built location and began the process of becoming a Pre-K to Grade 12 school.
  •

2012

  • 2012 - AAS completed a significant building project, doubling its capacity with the opening of the Vitosha building which became the new home of the Middle and High schools.
  •
