IB Retreat 2011

This year the IB1s and IB2s spent their three-day retreat in the Balkan mountains.

The first day the group travelled to the village of Zimevica in horse-drawn carriages. The ride was exciting and fun! When they reached the village, students were divided into 3 groups, which they named: The Fluffy Bunnies, The Discombobulated and The Amino Acid Marshmallows. Each group had to make their own flag and build a carriage together. After completing that task, students jumped on their bicycles and rode down rocky mountain paths. Even though it was raining, they enjoyed the ride a lot!

After the bike ride, another adventure was awaiting – two teams had to compete in building a catapult. Students needed to use their mathematics and physics knowledge to figure out the distance of the catapult from the target, the weight of the sand bags, what angle the catapult should be, etc. The winning team was rewarded with a fresh, tasty watermelon.

In the evening, students prepared their own bread and yoghurt, which they ate the next morning at breakfast. Some spent the night in tents, while others slept in a hotel.

The next morning everyone biked to the Iskar River, where rafting boats were awaiting them. The rafting was wild, with the current running fast and the boat going up and down the foamy waters. Later, students engaged in a treasure-hunt. As a final challenge of the day each group was given a box of products and had to prepare a creative and tasty dinner from those.

The final day of the IB retreat was dedicated to rock-climbing and rappelling. Students also engaged in some community service work, building a bench and cleaning graffiti from a shed.
The IB Retreat 2011 was great! Everyone enjoyed the variety of activities and learned a lot.
