Service Learning

Our Mission
To enhance academic, personal, social and intellectual growth by instilling students with a sense of compassion, justice and responsibility in their quest to develop as global citizens.

Our Goals:
- To integrate service learning projects into the school's programs.
- To blend service into learning activities in such a way that both community organizations and student learning are enriched.
- Service learning projects are an extension of the curriculum and units we currently have in place.
- To have students obtain a better understanding of their learning through real life experiences.
- To involve students actively in the service learning process: planning and preparation, implementing a project, reflecting and assessment, acknowledgement.
- To develop a service learning program at school, within the community and in a more global context

Enhancing Understanding

Service learning enhances everyone involved in the projects. It is reciprocal, and provides a much needed service to community organizations, while benefiting student learning at all ages. The lives of community groups are enriched by a much needed service, while giving students a deeper understanding of what they are learning in the classroom. Service learning projects are linked to academic content and curriculum standards at each grade level. Students are actively involved in creating projects which allows them to be responsible citizens, The teachers and AAS staff are there to act as facilitators, role models, and cheerleaders who guide students through the service learning process.
