Theatre
Elementary school Drama is integrated within the topics being studied. Taking on roles in unscripted role-plays students develop a sense of character and learn story-telling skills while solving real or imagined problems in a supportive environment. Drama may involve the creation of imaginative stories; writing and presenting short scripted pieces related to the curriculum or presenting for public performance through readers’ theatre.
All MS students explore theatre through a scripted public performance. This ambitious program ensures that everyone gains valuable stage experience, whilst developing confidence in a safe rehearsal environment. As the show takes shape, students also take time to explore the essentials of acting such as use of voice, facial expression, physicality and gesture.
HS students are challenged to devise their own performance pieces, using a series of Explorative Strategies (such as thought-tracking, cross-cutting, marking the moment, hot-seating, still image, narrating & forum theatre). As they master these new tools, it enables them to be imaginative and create theatre together, within commonly agreed structures.
In IB Theatre, students continue making and performing theatre with increasing complexity as they develop their knowledge of world theatre and its key practitioners. Not only must they become able performers, they should also regard themselves as practitioners, amassing a body of evidence to show their development as directors, designers, technicians and researchers.
There is strong emphasis on reflection at all levels; students evaluate what they have done and what they have seen others do. They are guided in expressing their opinions tactfully, using the language of the theatre. The school also ensures that students see professional work, which is not only enjoyable but also further stimulates reflection and discussion.
