Social Studies Curriculum

MISSION STATEMENT

Social studies education aims to enable students to participate in a changing society as informed, confident and responsible citizens.

KEY GOALS

The broad goal for Social Studies at the Anglo-American School will be that students will develop knowledge and understanding about human society as they focus on the following:

  • The organization of people in groups and the rights, roles, and responsibilities of people as they interact within groups;
  • The contribution of culture and heritage to identify and the nature and consequences of cultural interaction of cultural interaction;
  • The interaction of people with places and the environment and the ways in which people represent and interpret place and environment;
  • The relationships between people and events, through time, and interpretations of these relationships;
  • The allocation and management of resources by people and participation by people in economic activities;
  • The nature of society with respect to participating responsibly.


    METHODOLOGY

The instruction of Social Studies is guided by three principles of learning:

  • Learning requires the active participation of the student
  • Learning takes place in a variety of ways and at different rates
  • Learning is both an individual and a group process

    When planning for instruction, teachers should begin by considering the following:
  • The needs and experiences of students
  • The achievement objectives for the strands
  • The achievement objectives for the processes
  • The settings
  • The perspectives
  • The focus themes or topics
  • The assessment of the learning

Programme planning may be organized in various ways. These include the following:

  • Studies based on a single strand
  • Integration across strands
  • Studies based on issues, themes, or topics

    Important considerations for teaching the social studies programmes include the following:
  • Using a variety of teaching approaches
  • Using a comparative approach - Looking for similarities and difference
  • Linking social studies with other curriculum areas
  • Using a variety of resources
  • Meeting the needs of all students and utilizing their prior experiences
  • Employing a range of assessment methods
