PSHE: PERSONAL , SOCIAL and HEALTH EDUCATION Curriculum
MISSION STATEMENT
The Personal, Social and Health Education Program (PSHE) is based upon
the following premises: (1) that students can acquire knowledge, attitudes, values,
and behaviors which will enable them to make sound personal and social decisions,
and (2) that sound personal and social decisions will have a significant
impact upon the individual’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual
development.
Personal, Social and Health Education program is offered in Kindergarten through grade 8 and includes
objectives in each of the following content strands: personal health and
safety (including disease prevention and control), nutrition, substance
abuse prevention, social and emotional competence (concept of self and others;
socialization; problem solving and conflict resolution; communication; sharing;
empathy and caring), children in transition, and, starting in grade 5, study and organizational
skills
In grades 5-8 sexual education will be part of the Personal, Social and Health Education
program. The aim is to develop in young people an understanding of the changes
associated with puberty, a positive attitude to themselves, a sense of well
being through adequate body care, and a confidence in their relationships
so that they treat others with sensitivity and consideration.
KEY GOALS
PSHE learning objectives are sequential at each grade level, building upon
learning experiences, from the previous grade. Objectives are behavioral
and measurable. Content activities are designed to incorporate one or more
of the following educational goals:
- Develop a positive self-concept
- Improve decision-making ability related to health/ personal and social
issues
- Clarify health/ personal and social attitudes or value
- Increase health knowledge
- Improve communication skills
- Improve health related skills
- Develop social responsibility
- Develop skills to deal with transition
(Additionally, PHSE content activities are designed to incorporate the application
of skills and knowledge from other subject areas to create an integrated
program, which maximizes the use of instructional time)
