Music Curriculum

MISSION STATEMENT

The AAS music program strives to engage all areas of intelligences: Verbal-linguistic, Math-logic, Spatial, Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal. By learning about music in its different forms and styles- from songs and dances to symphonies and operas - in an integrated way, students are prepared to participate more meaningfully socially in school and later, in society. The program encourages students to explore their potential by providing opportunities for development of musical and performance skills, expression of thoughts and feelings, creativity and cooperative effort.

One of the highest priorities of the Music program at AAS is to support other areas of the curriculum, which will give students a holistic experience. This is especially beneficial in relation to the use of Drama in the classroom.

KEY GOALS

Students will:

  • develop their singing voice within its own range;
  • develop rhythmic coordination;
  • demonstrate a recognition and understanding of the language and symbols of music;
  • experience creative musical expression through singing, playing instruments, movement and drama;
  • participate in group activities which ensure appreciation of music from different perspectives;
  • develop and refine expression of feelings through music;
  • refine responses to the musical expression of others through a variety of listening experiences.

RATIONALE

Music is a universally significant part of cultural heritage. Music education is the agent for the recognition, preservation, refinement and transmission of cultural heritage. By studying music, students gain the knowledge, values and creative expression of others. This helps to increase their cultural understanding of the world. Music education can contribute to many areas of children’s growth and give them the joy of creating something uniquely their own, individually and in groups. Music should be one of the most vital, adaptable and enjoyable subjects taught in elementary schools.
