Art Curriculum

MISSION STATEMENT

Art at AAS enables the student to become visually aware and provides the means for them to express ideas and feelings in a visual and tactile form. It does this by providing the students with opportunities:

  • to become more aware of their environment and their relationship to it
  • to consider, select and organize materials and media and to gain knowledge of techniques, processes and skills
  • to develop, express and communicate feelings and ideas
  • to enjoy and appreciate their own art and that of others
  • to make interactive studies of some aspects of Art History

KEY GOALS

Students will explore different materials and media. Through practice they will develop abilities, skills and techniques. They will explore the visual elements of pattern, line, shape, form, color, tone and texture.

Students will express ideas and feelings visually and will develop personal styles through resolving design problems. They will communicate through Visual means and will learn to co-operate with others in resolving some design tasks. Finally, they will reflect, describe, appreciate their own and famous artist’s work.

METHODOLOGY

In Visual Arts, children learn through discovering new media and techniques and participating in the process of creating and designing. This process occurs individually as well as in small or large groups.

Within the classroom context, students share their achievements with their partners and the teacher. Class and school displays are a way to gain a wider audience. In addition, the students show their work and receive feedback.

They also participate in the visual part of a group production (drama, concerts and school celebrations) where more than one expressive art is involved. Visiting exhibitions and inviting artists to the Art class are other means of gaining an insight into the Visual Arts.

Field trips and outdoors exercises stimulate the interest and sensitivity and develop artistic awareness. The sketches and notes can be followed up later in the classroom. This experience may also contribute to lifelong leisure interests.
